Border Fence Builders Fined for, Yep, Hiring Illegals
I think this happened before. At least, some fence builders getting caught with illegals. This was, also, an on-going joke about who was going to build the fence? Illegals, of course. Anyway, these dirtbags should have gotten some time along with the fines.
SAN DIEGO – The principals of a Riverside-based company that built part of the U.S.-Mexico border fence were fined and sentenced to probation and community service yesterday for hiring undocumented immigrants, concluding a case that is considered a rarity in federal court.
Why not prison sentences?
U.S. District Judge Barry Ted Moskowitz sentenced each to three years of probation, including 180 days of home confinement with electronic monitoring and 1,040 hours of community service.
In addition, the company will forfeit $4.7 million, an estimate of proceeds earned from using undocumented labor, as part of a plea agreement. Kay also was fined $200,000 and McLaughlin $100,000.
“This is the first case, at least in California, that we're aware of where company executives were facing jail time and were convicted of a felony specifically related to the hiring of illegal aliens,” Michael Carney of the San Diego office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said later.
Similar criminal prosecutions of employers have been pursued under harboring, smuggling or other statutes, but “as far as a straightforward illegal hiring case, this really is a first,” Carney said.
This just breaks my damned heart.
