Baptists to Aid Immigrants? Update from the Article's Writer
Ahhh, there was one key word missing from this article, "Illegal?" I have no problems with any group helping American citizens, even paroled convicts trying to get back on track. I have no problem with any group helping LEGAL residents of this country as long as they're operating by the laws. BUT if these churches are actively trying to aid and abet active criminals then I have a problem with that. I would have a problem with churches being used as a drug drop house, a place of refuge from which to plan robberies, etc..
Citing a biblical obligation to speak on behalf of the stranger, Texas Baptist leaders will announce today the creation of a national initiative that will train churches to provide legal assistance to immigrants seeking citizenship.
"We know there is a need for this," Paynter said. "There's so many things that are broken in our immigration system. . . . There are a lot of people who could get papers and could get a status adjustment, but they don't have access to . . . trusted and government-accredited help." Huh? Government help in aiding criminals? Wouldn't really surprise me. This government has been assisiting criminals for a long time.
Oh, I saw a great quote from a guy responding to someone beating a Bible and asking WWJD? John 10:1
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.
I know, I know. It's out of context, he was really talking about.... But I think it can stand on its own. *S*
I emailed the question of whether this program was aimed at illegal aliens, legal immigrants, or both, to the writer. She was nice enough to respond:
Thanks for pointing that out. I will alert my editor. The program would be open to immigrants who are here legally and illegally.
