This guy just doesn't get it, because he doesn't want to get it.  He wants to stick his head in the sand and blow smoke out of his ass.  He's good at that.

Idiot

Local law enforcement officials shouldn't have to become de facto immigration agents. Federal authorities are supposed to enforce the nation's immigration laws. BULLSHIT. Crime is everyone's business, especially law enforcement on a local level. What? You expect ICE to catch every illegal absconder by themselves? Notice that bank robbery, etc.. are federal crimes but have you ever heard of an incident where a cop found a trunk load of counterfeit currency and shut the lid then said, "That's a federal matter and we don't want to get involved?" Why should local law enforcement treat illegals any differently?

But the federal government's failure to keep track of illegal immigrants has put police and sheriff's departments in an unfair predicament. They know that hundreds of illegal immigrants are cycling through courts and jails every month, many already facing deportation orders. But when Immigration Customs and Enforcement officials are informed, nothing usually happens. Well, yes and no. And I wonder where you come up with your figure of hundreds every month? Easily thousands if not more. Many/most jails don't even bother checking immigration status, they just run inmates thru a fingerprint check for wants and warrants in the hope they'll keep some wanted murderer, etc.. off the streets. But, in fairness, ICE has a reputation in some areas of taking no action against lower level dirtbags. That should stop. Every illegal reported should be put thru the deportation mill.

Cobb officials estimate that 20 percent of the foreign-born inmates being held in the 2,200-bed jail for local crimes already have deportation orders pending against them. That includes defendants charged with child molestation, weapons offenses, and drug- and alcohol-related offenses. Others include people arrested for minor crimes, including driving without a license. Many of those have been deported before and returned to the United States illegally.

But so far, Cobb's jailers seem to be handling their new responsibilities prudently. His last sentence is about the only thing I agree with.
