Missouri getting serious about illegal aliens, and the thumb-suckers don't like it.
This article has a couple of good points and a couple of the typical "boo-hoo" points. When states step up and take a stand for enforcing the law they not only help protect their citizens, they help the whole country.
ST. LOUIS - Six weeks into the state's crackdown on illegal immigrants, 52 arrests have been made — with most of those arrested caught in routine traffic stops, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Thursday.
Some have hailed Gov. Matt Blunt's new policy, but others worry it leads to racial profiling of Hispanics. Gee, I've NEVER heard that one before. (choke)
"I've never heard of anyone who is not Hispanic being taken in for failing to use the turn signal," said Tony Rothert, legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union office in St. Louis. He believes the Missouri State Highway Patrol lacks a "coherent policy" for deciding whom to arrest. Tony believes as he will, I believe he's full of shit. Something like 85% of illegal aliens are Hispanic, so wouldn't it go to reason that there will be a disproportionate number of Hispanics being charged with immigration violations? AND, if you can't show to the officer's satisfaction that you are who you say, because you forgot your license, then there's a good chance you're going to jail until they determine who you are. Assuming illegals don't have licenses and can't show who they are, there's a good probability they're going to jail. Breaks my heart.
Blunt began the crackdown on Aug. 27. He pointed to an illegal immigrant from Peru accused of committing a triple murder in New Jersey while free on bail on a rape charge. Blunt said an earlier immigration check could have prevented the killings.
At that time, Blunt ordered the Highway Patrol to run residency checks on everyone troopers lock up.
In fact, the patrol is encouraging officers to run computerized immigration checks on motorists who lack sufficient identification, though it allows exceptions when the officer personally knows the driver.
"Our people are trying to do everything they can to make sure people can legally operate vehicles," patrol Maj. Brent Johnson said. "If something bad were to happen, the question would be, 'Why didn't you check their status?'" Thank you, Major Johnson. You are EXACTLY correct. How would anyone feel to learn that they're loved ones died at the hands of an illegal who should've been discovered during an earlier encounter with law enforcement, but nobody bothered to find out? These crimes by illegals ARE preventable if only law enforcement would do their jobs. Maybe I should say, "If they were ALLOWED to do their jobs."
