I get into these debates on a regular basis. Illegal immigration is NOT a party issue to me, it's a people issue. Yes, democrats are weaker on the issue but not by all that much. And it's more of a "disconnect" between the people and the politicians but, as we're seeing all over the country, more politicians are paying attention.

I've posted about this before, how many people wrongly blame republicans for the whole mess. Yes, Bush and other republicans tried like hell to get another amnesty passed but it failed. And it failed because the American people raised total hell over it. A large majority of republican senators opposed it and were joind by 15 democrats.

Look at almost any law or initiative in this country targeting illegals, or the employers, and you will find that it's mainly republicans pushing these laws. As a very current example, look at Arizona. Their new laws impose fines on employers that knowingly hire illegals. GREAT LAW!!! The pro-cheap labor and pro-illegals are fighting it tooth and nail. But who brought that law forward? REPUBLICANS. And it passed with large bipartisan support. But check this out. You would think there would be plenty of pro-cheap labor for business republicans that opposed it? WRONG. As best as I can find out, the ONLY votes against it came from democrats.
