Utah Governor to sign anti-illegal bill.
Not tough enough and we'll see how much bite is really in it but, for now, a step in the right direction. Hardly mentioned is the fact that they intend to continue giving driving permits to illegals. Cowards!
Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. is expected to sign a comprehensive immigration bill if no more major changes are made to it.
After making amendments to the proposal, the House approved the bill in a veto-proof 56-15 vote today. Only three Democrats - Reps. Janice Fisher, Karen Morgan and LaWanna Shurtliff - out of 20 in the House supported the measure. Ok, Utah. That's 17 jerks you need to vote out.
A coalition of religious leaders and the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce support SB81. THAT worries me. Other anti-illegal immigration supporters were pleased with the bill, saying it was better than nothing.
Bill opponents said they are concerned about racial profiling and how the proposed law will make victims fearful of reporting crimes. GROAN.
Also today, the Senate approved a bill that would put stronger restrictions on the driving privilege card for mostly undocumented immigrants.
The comprehensive immigration bill would:
Mandate that agencies that provide public benefits (using local or federal funding) verify that applicants are legally in the United States.
Enlist some state and local law enforcement officers to enforce federal immigration statutes.
Require public employers and their contractors to verify the legal status of workers.
Make it a Class A misdemeanor to conceal, harbor, transport or shelter undocumented immigrants. (Charitable or humanitarian assistance is exempted.)
Require county sheriffs to check the documentation status of inmates in county jails. YES!!!
Mandate the state to verify the documentation status of people before issuing them a restaurant, liquor or private club license. Very nice.
