Two jail escapees, one an illegal, plead "Not Guilty" to escape charges.
I'll never get our "justice" system. Basically, no matter how guilty you are and how there's no way to get out from under that fact, plead "Not guilty" anyway. In some instances there's an incentive to fess up. "Look, Asshole. Plead guilty and we'll drop the other charge and cut the sentence."
Two men whose daring escape from a New Jersey jail was reminiscent of the movie "The Shawshank Redemption" pleaded not guilty Monday to escape charges.
One of the men, Otis Blunt, who allegedly left a taunting note for a guard at Union County Jail who later committed suicide, also rejected a plea deal on separate robbery and assault charges.
Blunt and fellow prisoner Jose Espinosa each face a count of third-degree escape, which could add three years to each man's sentence, prosecutors said.
At the time they escaped, Blunt was facing robbery and weapons charges stemming from the shooting of a convenience store manager. Because a weapon was used in the alleged crime, he could face life in prison if convicted, state Superior Court Judge Joseph P. Donohue said. A trial was set for June 2.
Espinosa previously pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter. He was sentenced last month to 17 years in prison.
