Farmers Branch tries new tactic to ban renting to illegal aliens

Sadly, I think this is what Hazelton tried, and lost. Sounds fair enough to me. It doesn't put the monkey on the landlords, it puts it on the renters and city. Very simply, if you want to rent a place to live in Farmers Branch you are required to get a permit, no matter who you are. How is that "racist?" But,as said, I don't know if will survive a court challenge.

Sending the right message, "Get out."

The earlier ordinance would have required apartment managers or owners to obtain and maintain evidence that tenants are U.S. citizens or legal residents. Opponents said that would unfairly burden apartment personnel with deciding who was eligible to rent.

Ordinance 2952, by contrast, would require prospective renters to pay $5 to the city and declare their citizenship or legal U.S. residency to obtain a license to rent a house or apartment. Landlords could rent to anyone with a license. The city would be responsible for checking the tenants' information against a federal database to confirm their legal status.
